Wisdom has sustained my life and work. Wisdom from a Sage is partly memoir and partly my sharing of tips and lessons learned as a preacher of the Gospel, pastor, and family man. I’ve intentionally written this book for preachers and pastors, not only because I am one, but also because I have discerned what my role is as an elder in pastoral ministry. I have discerned that building up preachers and encouraging them to give their all to God is a part of my ministry calling and gift.

The Rev. Dr. Samuel Jackson Gilbert Sr. was pastor emeritus at the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Houston, Texas. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Bishop College, Master of Arts in Christian Education from Southwestern Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry from Houston Graduate School of Theology. Dr. Gilbert was founder and president of the Houston Metropolitan Baptist Minister’s Conference. He was appointed by Mayor Lee Brown to the Houston Metropolitan Transit Authority Board of Directors. Dr. Gilbert served as general secretary of the National Baptist Convention of America and president of the Missionary Baptist General Convention of Texas Sunday School and BTU Congress. In 2020, Dr. Gilbert was honored with the Legacy Award given by Baylor University’s Truett Seminary and Kyle Lake Center for Effective Preaching at its second annual African American Preaching Conference.
